Revised House Rules Document, 2/2/16

Revised House Rules Document, 2/2/16

I have done a full revision of the house rules document, trying to regularize and balance changes made over the last two years and fixing some rules that never caught on because of their overly complex nature. Finally, I added some encumbrance and capacity figures for common containers to the inventory section.

I will review these tomorrow night before the game begins, but have also highlighted the changes in the Google Drive document if you want to review beforehand.

I’ve taken the liberty of copying everything in the Cart/Wagon/Building, Hireling Ledger and Townhouse journals to a single googledoc.

This is mostly for my own benefit, since I’m the self-appointed quartermaster and all, but I think it’s a better option. The journals are pretty handy and all in game, but searching through them is getting a bit messy at times, and with the need to constantly save and edit, or move them out the way so I can see the map, or minimise them, or wait for others to edit, etc etc, I figured we needed a better option.

So googledoc. Also means everything is in one place, can have multiple people editing without issue, and I can use search to find stuff 😀

Only thing missing at the current point is the entries for Derich and his rebels, but hopefully everything is laid out well and easier to read. (Also with added jokes!)

As requested last night, I have copied the terminal map from the main campaign to the mapping campaign. Alessandro Bertolucci, see the link below if you want to join this ancillary campaign; the players use it to create their own maps while we play (I make everyone there a GM with full editing privileges).

I’ve posted a new resource to the shared drive (and will be adding a link at the top of the community page): a quick summary of active and dormant adventure hooks along with a very brief overview of the various factions. This will hopefully prove useful, especially to new players. Please edit this however you wish.

Chuq’s Surreal Adventure Somewhere Else

Chuq’s Surreal Adventure Somewhere Else

– Consciousness slowly returns to Chuq. He seems to be lying on a comfortable bed; as he opens his eyes, he sees the figure of Dolmen leaning over him holding a candle. He says, “Chuq, you need to concentrate. Xenotel doesn’t bother to watch me, but you need to concentrate and block him so we can talk.”

– Dolmen shushes him, saying that “Just listen – he will hear if you speak. You are going back soon; they need you to carry something for them. There are some things you need to know first, though.”

– [Flash and suddenly they are in a small space with light coming up through a grate on the floor]: “The first thing to understand is that none of this is real; it’s a dream inside a prison – but a dream of a real place. Like a dream, time and space – even death – mean nothing here. Also like a dream, the dreamer is ultimately in control.”

– [Points to area below grate where Xenotel sits on a silver throne; Thorfus confronts him] Xenotel: “So, tell me, what have you learned?” Thorfus: “That this is your prison, somewhere inside one of the ancient’s machines and that you need Chuq to carry something back to the real world.” Xenotel: “Anything else? No? Not your best showing. Better luck next time.” [Xenotel then snaps his fingers and Thorfus disintergrates].

– [Flash to library near Dolmen’s cube]: “Don’t worry, Xenotel will bring him back soon. It’s a game, you understand. Thorfus wakes up here, investigates, is summoned, and dies. It’s happened thousands of times in the centuries he has been here. Of course, he always finds me and we talk – you see, I’m just a false memory and Xenotel doesn’t bother to erase me. I remember every time my nephew comes to find me, shares his findings, and then goes to die. I represent the collective memories of thousands of my nephews who have died and I can’t warn them or help or he will know I remember. I can tell you, though, because your mind is closed to him.”

– “This is Xenotel’s prison, somewhere in a machine created by the ancient dwarves that was corrupted by the rebels. This is his little fortress that preserved his true self; he can’t leave, though, until that corruption is cleansed. He slept for millennia here, but something woke him recently – a signal from outside the prison.”

– “The other thing you need to know is that they are all here – the ancients. You see, the followers of Xen’Teler have always believed that he saves the righteous and keeps them safe in the afterlife. That’s not a metaphor or a spiritual truth, though, he has literally saved them here and is waiting to release them back into the world.” [Gesturing at the infinite rows of information cubes].

– [Listening]: “There’s not much time now. They will wake you soon, but you need to see one more thing.” [Rushing through shelves like the arming scene of the Matrix until they come to a circular chamber with wider shelves and a glowing blue holograph of a sphere circled by two other spheres in the room’s center.

– Dolmen steps over to one shelf on the opposite wall and points at the plaque in ancient dwarven; if Chuq reads his mind this is what it says:] “Marchmain Sivis, First Consort to Matriarch Captain Anglana, Master Architect of the Crystal Tower, and Chief of Intelligence for XenoTel2”.

– With that, Dolmen’s blows out his candle and Chuq will wake in the cell at the dwarven estate.

Player Calendar, September 1, 2015

I’ve created a player copy of a calendar of campaign events from the version I made for my own organizational purposes. It’s been triple-checked to make sure all the spoilers are gone, but it still might be helpful for an at-a-glance sense of when past events occurred.

Curabel Maps Campaign on Roll20

Curabel Maps Campaign on Roll20

As discussed last night, I have setup a separate campaign for players to create and/or consult their own maps during our regular game. Use the link below to join and I will promote everyone to DM status later this week.

After breaking the ‘synchronization’ fields holding the reptile specimens in stasis, the party managed to defeat a Tyrannosaurus Rex and several Velociraptors in an epic fight. Of course, one T. Rex and a number of the raptors escaped through the suspiciously portal-shaped doorway into a jungle — although I’m sure nothing bad will come of that — and the Starchie Boyz still don’t have a way back to the upper reaches of Xen’Khel. Will they set-off into the wilderness with its killer dinosaurs or stay in the dungeon to face its undead hordes and a mysterious madman?

Quick Etymological Notes on Ancient Dwarven Names

Quick Etymological Notes on Ancient Dwarven Names

After checking my campaign notes, I just wanted to clarify a few things about those names Derich was throwing around:

Xen’Teler = “Far Seer” (i.e., he sits in the Silver Throne and watches over the world); Derich claims this is the name the rebels gave to the deity who replaced XenoTel and, prior to that, was just a informal title/name used by the ancient dwarves to refer to their original deity (contraction on the first syllable and addition of “er” on the second for unknown reasons).

Xen’Khel = “Far Fortress,” which received its name because it was farthest north of the dwarven khels; Derich’s claim that it is also the first khel is not familiar to any member of the party.

XenoTel = “Foreign/Alien ?”. Xeno and Xen are related words — which makes sense because someone who comes from “afar” is likely to be “foreign/alien”; Tel is not allowable without a suffix of some kind so is either a mistake, contraction, or new word.

Change to Rules Regarding Absent Players

Change to Rules Regarding Absent Players

Given the number of NPC party members (hirelings and hangers-on), it is no longer feasible to run the characters of absent players. I have noticed that keeping track of all these characters has become a distraction for the players in attendance and, as the DM, my responsibility to run non-party NPCs and monsters makes it impossible for me to take on that duty. To address this, I am making the following changes:

– If a player is absent when the party begins an adventure (e.g., leaves town to explore a dungeon), that player’s character will be assumed to have stayed behind. If the adventure lasts multiple sessions and the player returns to the campaign during that time, his character will be worked back into the party as soon as possible (dependent on the nature of the adventure).

– If a player is present for the beginning of an adventure but absent for a subsequent session before that adventure concludes, his character will not actively participate in the missed session or gain any treasure or experience from it. The exact handling of this will vary, but most often this will mean their character returns to a safe location (i.e., town or camp) to be worked back into the adventure upon the player’s return as soon as possible.
