Session 132 November 23, 2016

11:30 am, 20th of Tanrilden, entry foyer of the Keeper Estate fka the Grell Estate.

AD Clock reads 00.00.04.26

While Axel, Chuq, Ronan and Thorfus inspect the grounds and outbuildings about the mansion, Edan and Father Habraham explore inside. Footsteps and sobbing from the second floor draw their attention, so Edan sends Casear the bold to inspect. He follows his familiar shortly after. The three outside then join Father Habraham in the foyer and we all follow Edan to the second. More sobbing can be heard behind a door, so enter to find nothing within.

Edys Appleby is summoned to inspect the room but lunges at Chuq with a dagger. Struck unconscious, the illusionist appears to be over 90 years old. Father Habraham’s healing are ineffective. As we hoist the old man’s body, Thorfus witnesses a shimmering between him and the floor. His magic axe’s lash is too slow to connect as we hustle the dying illusionist to the front door. As we approach, we hear doors slam shut and the curtains flutter as if in a stormy wind. This is followed by the sound of shattering window on the 2nd floor then we see Edan fall to the ground outside. His fall wasn’t too bad, he recovers quickly. Habraham fumbles with the front door exclaiming it won’t budge. The monkeys have no problems opening the door so we can all exit.

As this occurred, Ronan was inspecting another part of the estate. Leaving Bellisonte with Father Habraham, we meet Ronan on the first floor. We rush to the basement when someone begins to yell hysterically. Outpacing the rest, Chuq and Ronan rush down a hallway. Ronan promptly slamming the doors shut behind them. Thorfus barrels through the first door after his monkeys fail to open it. Beyond is a hallway where Chuq can be heard laughing. The monkeys quickly open the various doors in the hallway discovering wine cellars. In one along the north is found a lonely rusty old sword. Following the laughing, Thorfus discovers a secret door, behind he finds Chuq the Monk shackled and chained between two pillars with Ronan carving into the Monks back.

This room strangely resembles Alain Grell’s lair in Kurlumen. After Ronan is subdued, Chuq’s bleeding flesh spells “ring Grell Bring Calle”. Thorfus shows Alain’s head making Ronan go limp; he seems himself once he recovers. While the three examine the disturbing trappings in the torture chamber, Edan has grasped the rusty sword only to be burned by the heat it radiates once it’s in his clutches. Ronan allows us to sheath the blade in his scabbard so that we might take it with us.

Wanting to destroy Alain’s toys, we collect various devices and an abundance of hair before ascending a spiral staircase to the top floor of the mansion. Beyond the single door at the top landing we see a transparent figure writing on the wall. The writing appears to be in blood. Thorfus sends a monkey to show the apparition Alain’s head. As the figure turns, Chuq and Thorfus flee in fear for hours through the streets of Midmark until they reach the Jolly Gorgon. The two have aged 10 years older. The Ghost disappears through a wall.

With Thorfus gone, the monkeys behave off. Ronan takes the box with Alain’s head which causes the autos to follow him out.

Edys dies form old age when they all meet outside. Unfortunately, Father Habraham fails to resurrect him. Bellisonte goes looking for Chuq. Edan examines the sword which is no longer hot when held. He removes his mind blocking circlet but doesn’t get a response from the sword. Ronan suggests Father Habraham speak with the dead to ask Edys for advice.

It is now 4:00 pm back as Habrahim cast speak with dead. Minutes pass before we are speaking with Matillis Orlebar and Sibilie Grell, the two spirits haunting this house. They want Adren Grell and his illegitimate daughter, to be with her and to punish him. Father Habraham advises to bury those two in blessed ground since they are both dead. Arden allegedly committed suicide while jailed for slavery and Calle was euthanized by Grayz the Devilfish. Before we leave for the Jolly Gogon, we ask Habraham to blesses a patch of ground in the garden so that we may bury Edys there.

Session 131 November 16, 2016

3:30 pm 14th of Tanrilden, walking from the Courthouse to the Ark Temple

AD Clock reads 00.00.05.01

While Axel trains Ronan on board the Jolly Gorgon and Edan consults with AldousRunnlebrook, Chuq and Thorfus walk across the high town square from the Courthouse to the Ark Cathedral. There are more city guards on duty outside the Cathedral but otherwise the area is devoid of people. The guards pass the two with little fuss, within one of the handful of acolytes in attendance meet the pair as they cross the antechamber. After explaining we are here to meet with Master of Spring Adhemar, the acolyte agrees to arrange a meeting with the cleric that resurrected Patriarch Darvo, Father (Canon)Habraham Gyldenbollocks either during or after our audience with Adhemar.

At his cell, we find Adhemar discussing civil and criminal legal aspects with Initiate Juhel. When asked, Adhemar expresses a good deal of interest in the role we negotiated for him. Apparently in full cooperation with Jardin, with the explicit intent to aid and abet the Islanders of Midmark, Adhemar is applying his considerable will to restore order and justice to the city. He laments how the city ordinances prohibit any Islander organizations, commercial or political and are structured to condemn debtors into indefinite indenture servitude tantamount to slavery. His ambition is to use his new position withJardin to coerce the city council to amend the laws or allow him to interpret the laws more favorably for the Islanders. Of course his persuasions will face significant opposition since antagonistic groups like the Native Unionists are in vocal open opposition to the city leadership. All the same, he is enthusiastic about his partnership withJardin/Thornton. He disapproves Chuq’sproposition to enlist as a Dervish, advising patience until the mental state of Grandmaster Angston can be assessed in person.

During the interview, Father Habrahimarrives. He and Thorfus speak while the Monks confer. Habrahim scoffs at the belief in ghosts and supposes the haunting of the Grell estate is tall tales and superstition. Now we have a clue as to why Newton had to face their fate alone. He is unconvinced whenThorgus argues the band of dead burglars where found without any signs of physical violence. With the promise of coin, he agrees to join us to the estate if but to only bless the house or at the worst exorcise the place if need be. Eventually we agree on a sliding scale for service rendered starting at 500 gpfor a blessing and as much as 2,500 if he confronts a powerful undead spirit. After discussing Baldric’s Gem, which is stowed away without any further research or investigation, we agree to meet five days hence to clear the estate.

NOTE – Habrahim mentioned Baldric Gem’s next public appearance will be during the Council of the Marks. A meeting Jardinexpects to preside.

During this time, Edan and Runnellbrookinterrogate Kalgunn further. Kalgunn claims Field Marshall Gorazim must have had an alternate way into the lower city of Xen Khel when he was protecting the Enclave since he visited the Research areas without having to travel through the upper city. The Liar shares an image of Gorazim derived from his Grandson’s memory. Besides being tall for a Dwarf, the image is of a full faced helmeted warrior in stylized power armor with a metallic right hand. When asked, Kalgunnexplains Gorazim lost his hand, but not how, and that a specialized autonotom serves in its place. Gorazim was not a popular personage until his streak of marginal success against the rebel assaults.

Edan summons a new familiar – Caesar, another black cat. Fortunately, the feral beast cleans up nice!

Leaving the Cathedral after 4:30 pm, Chuq and Thorfus retrieve Edan fromRunnelbrooks then collect Axel and Ronan from the Jolly Gorgon. First stop is the mill to inspect the submersible. It is safe. Before we leave, all but Chuq and Edan are greeted telepathically by Drays. He is more than miffed that his contacts in Chief AdvisorsGharspa’s household have reported the Sword of Dagon is not functional. He threatens to burn all the ships in the Midmark bay and make sure everyone knows it is our fault unless we successfully discover how to fix the Sword and tell him before we invite Prince Narsiclus via Gronsk to a summit with Prince Narsuth. This behavior pleasesSerithas since Drays is acting like a real Devil Fish. Both Serithas and Drays still keeps themselves hidden from each other. The party doesn’t want to confront this blatant threat at this time despite the fact we have water breathing abilities and fast swimming magic items.

Next we pay our respects at the burnt ruin of the Cock & Bull. On the way, Ronan visitsOrsibet the armorer. She is convalescing at the ark sanctuary up the street from her injuries of the night of the riots. Her assistants explains the modifications to the AncientDwarven swimming suits are not complete. He offers a handful of gold to ease Orsibet’ssuffering. While we examine the wreckage and admire the small shrines littering the area, an obviously drunk belligerent challenges us from up the street towards Newtown. He proclaims he is one of the rioters that torched the Cock & Bull then slewStarchie, Ellspeth and her lover then mutilated Starchie’s corpse. His drunken state interferes with mind reading, so the Monk decides to apprehend this man so that he might offer clues to the ring leaders. Hymert, the sobers overnight at the courthouse and yields nothing we can act on during the interview the next morning. Adhemar will have to execute this man because of his public admission of murder and brandishing of a poison dagger. We rest and shop the next three days until Ronan completes his training.

20th of Tanrilden

AD Clock reads 00.00.04.26

Ronan places a bounty for the ringleaders that murdered Starchie and Ellspeth at the Marlborough house. We promise 500 gp for each one, dead or alive. No one at the gambling hall has any leads but some have seen them before. Next we visit Jardin at Thornton’s estate. He has good and bad news which he delivers after handing over our warrants as Keepers of the Council and reminds us of our targets in Vargen and Xen Khel. (See session 130 summary)

Next is the Bad news: most of the Grell properties were already sold off. All of Grell’sliquid assets were seized by the city to repair the summer estates and pay reparations to some of Alain’s victims.

Finally he delivers the Good news: it’s really not Good news. He excitedly offers a field trip through the mirror to be marveled by the Empires newest inventions. Enticed the most,Edan leads Thorfus and Axel to touch the mirror after Jardin has already disappeared by doing the same. Ronan takes a minute to search about the office before he and Chuq follow.

Now everyone is in room. Jardin is standing next to a man in an unfamiliar uniform. It has the emblem of the dragon emperor surprisingly. Jardin welcomes us toGharmarost, “the greatest seaport of the world and home to the imperial navy”. We are shown a balcony to a view of an immense city 10 times as big as Midmark. Jardingpoints to a really huge boat in dry dock being plated in metal sheets. The superstructure is rounded, the frame is wood. Jardin proclaims this is the first Sky Fortress.

The city has an autonatom transportation system on rails in the streets. We witness steam work vehicles with weapon appendages being loaded onto other vessels.Jardin explains these vehicles are designed to capture the Returns’ dwarven fleet when they pass through the gate.

We are ushered into a hoist, similar to the electrical hoists in the khels but obviously toEdan powered via steam not electricity.Jardin press L5, the lowest button then we descend. He elaborates on the Imperial plan – though we are going to undoubtedly fail to save the world from the Return, we are expected to discover the controls to the corrupted orbital defense system. With this knowledge the imperials will safely fly to intercept the Return’s armada as they are exiting the gate. They will board the Dwarvenvesssels, then once captured sail those vessels along with the Sky Fortress to invade theDwarven domain on the other side of the Gate.

At L5 is a very cool chamber, where we are shown a miniature version of the Wrath of the Waves engines. Jardin explains this functional miniature is the design that they will outfit at immense size on the Sky Fortress. He explains to Edan some of the design choices the Imperials have made then offers the miniature to Edan after demonstrating it’s control via a silver circlet. Thorfus tries to finagle a higher hierarchal circlet from the Jardin, but the Inquisitor refuses to hand over one of their gold circlets. We learn they don’t have a Crystal Circlet which can override their silver and gold circlets.

We learn all of the Dragon Emperor’s temples and cathedrals are busy making as much holy water as they can to fuel the full size engines. The Sky Fortress will have large external tanks of holy water to power eight to ten engines. They have yet to develop stabilizing the engines and won’t attempt to until the Sky Fortress is completed in about three weeks.

Though they can’t recharge ancient dwarvenbatteries, they have their own version that Thorfus can use to power his Lightning Axe. He is given two three charge batteries in exchange for his original which they keep for research. Chuq’s Monk Stick is inoperable and he refuses to turn it over without something traded in kind.

Jardin will not allow the admiral to shanghai Edan to join his research team. Obviously there is a power play between the two. Chuq reads the Admiral, he thinks Jardin is eccentric and powerful. Then we are escorted back to Midmark where the party departs Jardin to collect Father Habraham.

At the estate, we enter the main entrance unmolested. Nothing arises as we shout our presence save several birds flew down a hall after Chuq told them to exit the house. Time to find out the truth about this place…

Session 130 November 9th, 2016

Session 130 November 9th, 2016

Midday, 13th Tanrilden on board the Jolly Gordon setting sail from Beacon for Midmark.

AD Clock reads 00.00.05.02

Axel presides over the burial at sea without honors of Alain Grell’s body. He ensures the unceremonious ceremony is performed well out of sight of the villagers of Beacon. The sailing is smooth for the rest of the day and into the night.

AD Clock reads 00.00.05.01

Edan wakes before dawn after a night of vivid dreaming. All the others in the cabin are shocked when a sudden load bump is heard from his bunk. Surprise switches to awe when beams of bright light project out of the obviously nonplussed scholar’s eyes. Axel and Thorfus avert there gazes, one of them muttering something that sounds like “Won’t Sturgard me if I can help it!” Edan stands, obviously uncomfortable in his own skin. The beams of light slowly dim as the party continues to gawk at him. Fearing he is subject to outside attacks, he removes his ESP protection circlet and is relieved he still feels like himself. Remembering the feeling of great magical powers while dreaming, he rushes to the deck of the Jolly Gorgon and channels the pure energy coursing in his skin. Unlike yesterday, he can create twice as many magic missiles today! Ever testing the limits of reality, Edan retrieves an information Reliquary. Just by grasping it, the abundant transpatial energy flowing through his body activates the religuary as if he were an ancient Dwarven control pedestal.

We all rush to the aft cabin and find Edys Apliby dealing with the same problem. He greets us by saying “Something odd is going on…”When prompted, he creates the illusion of incomparable complexity and size. The cramped little cabin has all the trappings of an idyllic grotto, complete with brilliant foliage, sparkling waterfall and extravagant armor and clothing for himself and Bellisonte. He admits he was only trying for a few tufts of grass after dismissing the illusion. Remarkably, Bellisonte’s abilities aren’t affected like the magicians. Perhaps since her powers are bequeathed from her god, the deity’s own limits are unaffected by this change.

Edan consults Kalgunn by simply opening the sword’s chest and speaking out loud. Kalgunn is also affected and tells that he has not experienced such power levels since the fall of the Crystal Tower. He suspected Xeno Tel is releasing more transpatial energy for some ominous purpose. After the fall of the Crystal Tower, the same was done to aid in curing Prixalthumus’ virus. Realizing the Return is only five months away, his best guess is that this is preparation for opening the Gate. The energy demand to power the Gate is so high, we can expect the amount of available transpatial energy to steadily increase in the weeks to come. He also explains this process could have been initiated by an Administrator at one of the original ancient Khels, remotely or at the Orbital Palace itself.

We then talk some more about DVLs and learn that they can be created by Xeno Tel but there is no way to directly communicate with either DVLs or Demons without entering the transpatial space physically. And of course such a visit will likely leave a living being lost and stranded with just about no chance of return.

Next we examine our magical weapons and learn their eldritch glows are similarly affected. Whether the change is cosmetic alone isn’t explored at this time since our Merman meeting is looming. While Edan sets to writing copies of some of the more intriguing Jardin to Grell letters, Chuq and Thorfus explore some of the other magical devices. The night cap and court aren’t affected but that could be because we are out at sea and there aren’t any minds further away. Unfortunately, the scrying masks wasn’t augmented beyond it’s limited capacity.  Thorfus can not view other locals then those he already had.

Ronan suggests combining the night cap with the scrying mask to read the minds of those viewed via the mask. The Monk faints to the floor the three times he dons the mask. Thorfus’ mind is more resilient, he successfully wears the night cap and has his first and lengthy direct conversation with Serithas. Serithas admires Thorfus’ reverence of the Ancients. The two devices aren’t synergistic, he can’t read any minds viewed via the scrying mask.

Just at dawn while Axel begins Ronan’s training, the Jolly Gorgon arrives at the merman meet, there is a school waiting. One Merman announces Martham, chief steward of Chief Advisor Gharspa’s household is here with a message and a gift. Asking for Master Chuq and Lord Thorfus, the two surface dwellers committed to Prince Narsuth’s cause, the parley begins. The gift is 50 doses of Brunwege, the coral like plant that allows a surface dweller to breathe underwater, kept in a special sack that will keep its efficacy for 6 months. Martham explains the Brunwege has no other purpose for the Mermen save as a garnish.

It is hoped the Brunwege will permit our party to visit Shiggareth the Merman city. Martham cautions we shouldn’t visit accompanied by Devil Fish, Locatha or Sahuagin. He also instructs us to begin the visit from the fishing village of Shelton, ask after a local guide then walk along the sea floor to Shiggareth. When announcing ourselves, we can ask for the Hospitality of Chief Advisor Gharspa.

Martham chants the message we are asked to deliver. He repeats himself enough times so that Edan can record the following:

To the Devil Fish Gronsk, from Gharspa Thomramiel of Shiggareth, Chief Advisor to the Rightful Heir to the Merpeople Crown, the Exalted Prince Narusth. Please be advised that the exalted Prince Narusth has been gifted by the Great Powers of the Watery World with an ancient device of great power, known as the Sword of Dagon. This blessing is a sign that the Great Powers have smiled upon the exalted Prince Narusth and he invites his estranged brother, Prince Masculus, to join him in celebration of this auspicious time at a place of Prince Masculus’s choosing to discuss the future of the Merpeople and the healing of the great division that brings such pain to our people and strife to the Bay of Midmark. With my greatest respect and kindest regards, Gharspa Thomramiel of Shiggareth, Chief Advisor to the Rightful Heir to the Merpeople Crown, the Exalted Prince Narusth.

The Jolly Gorgon is moored back at Midmark dock around noon. Axel and Ronin stay on board training while Bellisonte, Chuq, Edan, Edys and Thorfus hire a carriage to Aldus Runnelbrooks home. The black curtains adorning the front window clenches a few chests until Aldus’ house servant excuses herself to retrieve him. He has horrific news. Rioters have burnt down the Cock & Bull, the tavern as well as the town house. Those bastards also killed Elspeth, her husband, the local potion seller and most heinously, Starchie our retired mascot. Aldous’ son Ferri was also lynched by rioter during the night of chaos. It’s Ferri’s death why the black curtains were hung. This is when we learn that Magistrate Thornton has been elevated to acting lord mayor with Master of Spring Adhemar assisting with magistracy duties.

Chuq plans to tell Aldus the truth of Thornton but Thorfus and Edan feel Aldus has too much tragedy as it is. Stalling, Chuq asks after Aldus’ Umamah, Evenkeel and his former wife. Aldus tells of how Evenkeel came to Curabel as an Admiral of an Imperial fleet whose point of view changed sometime after when he and Umamah met which coincides with Evenkeel’s discovery of his crown. Chuq seques the topic of Evenkeel to our revelation that Evenkeel was a royal Imperial Dragon, an heir to the Emperor, who after finding his ancient dwarven crown suddenly betrayed his family and lead the rebellion Aldus participated. Incredulous to this story, Aldus allows Chuq to share his memories of our confrontations with Jardin via the night cap.

Visibly struck by the news, Aldus resolves to spend his days in Midmark and speaks with us at length about other details. He plans to contemplate his role now that his home is ruled by his bitterest enemy. However, the distance of time seems to have tempered his passions. Edan advises caution even though our suggestion to go north is dismissed.

Edan then relates Axel’s underground tale finishing with the prophecy of the Return. Then Thorfus shows Aldus the ancient dwarven clock counting down. They then interrogate Kalgunn about the abundance of transpatial energy. Edan steers the conversation to learn than a possible antecedent of the name Ironhand might have been derived from the name Gorazin which meant Steel Grasp. Kalgunn tells of a Lord Marshal Gorazin, last of the Lord Marshals that secreted the Ancient Dwarven enclave into hiding after the fall of the Crystal Tower. It was Gorazin’s efforts that kept the research under Xen Khel on track to find a cure as the rebels where winning the day on the surface. Remarkably, Thornton is quiet during this conversation.

Taking our leave, our next stop is Thornton’s estate to deliver Grell’s head. Not there, the guards offer a carriage to the courthouse. We meet Thorton in conference with a few City Council members. Thorfus presents the box holding Grell’s head. We are congratulated, then Thorton pronounces our boons for bringing the fugitive to justice (some, including Jarding, are disappointed Grell wasn’t taken alive).

We are commissioned as Keepers of the Council, a small grey cloak like group for dealing with opponent without the city where as the Grey Cloaks deal with problems within the city. A letter enlisting help and solace from any city office or official in the name of the Council is handed to Thorfus. Our band will report to Thornton not Adhemar since the Master is only assisting the Magistrate, not assuming the position. Our first assignments are:

1. Marchmain Sithis – sanction with extreme prejudice.

2. Bargemen’s guild members – Rolth Barber, Malich and Havlin Flowermaid (acting guild master) – sanction or apprehend for justice in Midmark.

Thorfus negotiates other boons, such as possession of the Grell estate and any other holdings in and out of Midmark. Specifically, there is a summer home at Sea Breeze as well as any other cash deposits, investment interests, and places of honor in public places. Jardin promises to investigate these items during this week.

We then retire to another room to have a private conference. Jardin relates Orsibet and Tilek testified that the Cock & Bull was attacked by 70 rioters that set the buildings alight. A women cleric and thin magic user were the rioter’s ringleaders. Richie Lefician, known criminal was identified as the thin magician. The two killed Starche and lingered after to ambush us. They vandalized and left a grotesque message using our best friend’s entrails: “Welcome home Starchie Boys, this is for Nigel and my girls” Orsibet identified a fisherman than frequented the C&B was with the mob. This man told Orsibet he blamed the Starchi Boys for the death of his wife and daughter.

Jardin then explains Patriarch Darvo was miraculously resurrected. Actually, a Junior inquisitor is posing as Darvo. Adhemar was not subsumed because we Celestial Dragon adherents are proving to be great proto imperialist. He also has felt the freer transpatial energy. Word from the Empire is that Grand Master Angston will return to Curabel shortly and there are plans to move against the Silver Throne, specifically the Lonely Isle.

Session 129 November 2, 2016

Early evening, 12th of Tanrilden, main deck of the Jolly Gorgon in the Midmark harbor

AD Clock reads 00.00.05.03

Ironhand’s new crew is slightly weirded out about the night’s happenings. Leaving port, keeping station overnight just out of the harbor then returning to directly to a berth crowded by the Keepers isn’t the typical fare for this merchant crew. Our self-selected moniker of Keepers of the Council isn’t official yet but unless Jardin proclaims otherwise, Axel, Chuq, Edan, Ronin and Thorfus will answer by that name. Captain Thorfus mostly disregards the Jolly Gorgon crews concerns by directing them to their duties. We set off with little delay.

Shortly after leaving the harbor proper, all but Chuq feel the mental buzz of a Devil Fish. Drayz has sought us via his human lackeys all night and is relieved we are alive and in possession of the Sword of Dagon. Thorfus agrees to hand over the Sword to Drayz’ Merman allies. They agree on a code phrase to vet the merman’s authenticity (curious that Drayz chooses to be away during the exchange). The code phrase is “Starchie flies to the moon”.

Serithas notes to Chuq that Drayz is assiduously avoiding mental contact with Chuq and the Night Court. Though curious to know why and engage Drayz directly, he doesn’t want Chuq to press an encounter with Drayz at this time. Perhaps Arraquiel could explain the youth’s reticence, so they will pursue the matter further when the Keepers seek after Arraquiel in Vargen.

Another hour into our sail to Hughe’s island village, we are met by a school of Mermen.  The apparent spokesmerman of the school announces the code phrase correctly then introduces Gharspa former secondary advisor to the late Merman King and current primary advisor to Prince Narusth. The night court confirms the Mermen’s sincerity then Chuq tries to coerce Thorfus into further negotiations for recompense or sanctions from the Merman. He goes so far as to remark to Gharspa that the instrument of peace that his Prince needs is actually our instrument of peace so all the factions (Devilfish, Locathoth, Mermen and Suahagin) should likely come to Midmark’s table to negotiate.

Thorfus takes the honorable and conciliatory path and simply asks for a bonus of water breathing corals to be delivered the day hence. His concession to the monk is asking Edan to disable the controls to the Sword but not alerting Gharspa that he now has a dud. Fortunately,  Edan has learned how to control the Sword of Dagon after studying the records we recovered.

Before Gharspa and his school leave, it is suggested that the Keepers are travelling to Vargen soon and could seek out Gronsk who then could invite Prince Mascalus to a summit. Gharspa sees merit in the suggestion. If his liege agrees, there might be a missive with the water breating corals tomorrow. Being land dwellers, we suggest a fee could accompany the missive, he scoffs at the materialism.

The sail is uneventful until the next morning. Chuq assess Bellisentes natural hand to hand ability and is surprised at her aptitude. She is taught basic forms to practice, perhaps the physical activity could fill out her gangly frame….

AD Clock ready 00.00.05.02

Without incident, the Jolly Gorgon arrives at Hughe’s home fishing village. We lay anchor and board a skiff with Hughe and the henchmen after Appleby has scanned the locals for Inquisitors. Hughe had already sighted his mother washing laundry by the river. Surprisingly, he asked after his father. Somehow, no one seemed to not notice his confusion….

Our slip is meet by Olef and Kenny, two fisherman, at the pier. They are obviously nervous about our arrival and murmur to each other in response to our statements and questions. Chuq’s assurances are shrugged aside by the two as every other reply is an encouragement to leave. In contrast, Thorfus is buried under a buxom embrace from Hughe’s mother Annabelle when he presents the lad to her. Noticing that the crowd is missing young ladies or children, Bellisente enquirers after them amongst the women watching by the river. They are as tight lipped as the fishermen.

Smelling worse than rotten fish, we press Olef and Kenny about the lack of young women and children. Eventually they break down and explain we are all being watched from the old imperial fort above the village about an hour through the jungle from the village. The occupants are holding the children and young woman hostage. Fearing for the hostages, we agree to leave the way we came and promise to return under cover of night to mount a rescue. The plan meets with their approval and we are escorted by the crowd to the docks after Thorfus hands over a small fortune of 100 gp to Annabelle for Hughe’s care and education.

Hughe’s only regret is saying good bye to Meow our newest mascot. When asked Meow likes the idea of living near so much fish so he leaps off Chuq’s shoulder and orbits about Hughe’s ankles in anticipation. The boy is happier than we have ever seen him.

Once the Jolly Gorgon sets off, we collect in the aft cabin so the Chuq can shadow ferry the party to the verge of the jungle beyond the village. A path to the imperial fort, Kurlumen is nearby. It takes less than hour to walk there. The drawbridge over a deep gorge is down. Edan casts an invisibility circle that allows us all to enter unnoticed. At the bailey there are two guards posted on either side of a double door. The night cap tells us the two are imperial agents wondered by instructions to allow unknown guests free entrance and access to the fort’s guest, someone who makes them uncomfortable and repulsed.

These two are very disciplined. They heed Chuq’s mental instructions to open the double doors and one agrees to escort the invisible guests after telling us the guest is at the top of the tower and that the hostages are held in the near tower. He leads us down then up and through hallways until he is challenged by a Dervish. The Dervish warns him that the guest is at it again and that he’d likely want to keep clear. Mentally, the guide is told to follow the Dervishes advice. The guide describes the rest of the journey before departing.

Up more flights and through several trap doors leads to the peak of this tower. It is joined to its companion by a decaying bridge which is occupied by Alain Grell and several victims. He is spied through the key hole of the door between us and the bridge. Waiting until turns his back to the door, Chuq slips out, slinks across the bridge then stuns Alain from behind using the Marlin bursts from the surf. “Bet you never thought to see me again” claims Throfus as he trusses up the agape villain. Ronan emerges from Edan’s circle to help Grell’s young victims.

Looting Grell’s sleeping chamber yields a chest containing some armor and clothing as well as numerous correspondences between he and Jardin detailing their machinations to steal the Wrath of the Waves plans and Grell’s eventual return to Midmark society implicating the Starchie Boyz as the perpetrators of all of Grell’s crimes. The most recent letter admonishes Grells’ excesses and suggests Hughe’s island might have to be cleansed to cover up his behavior.

With Grell in custody and everyone but Edan visible, we collect the hostages here and descend below to rescue the others. The imperial guards and Dervishes all follow Jardins instructions and do not interfere with us in any way. A young Dervish’s motivations and actions are challenged by Chuq. His discipline, composure and sense of purpose gives the Superior Master pause. However, it doesn’t stop him joining Thorfus in obliquely ridiculing their treatment and lack of morality in their treatment of the hostages. Too our dismay, we learn that Grell had shoved two of his young women hostages off the bridge to their deaths. When called for, Flamemaster Beneyt, the leader of the perhaps as many as 20 Dervishes in the fort, does not answer.

Our return to the village with the survivors is met with surprise and celebrations. We are given a hut to keep Grell as we wait for the return of the Jolly Gorgon. Axel unloads his weeks of frustration in the underdark and loathing for the loss of Spite into Grell. Thorfus has little time to interrogate Grell between Ronan’s scalping and Axel’s burning and chopping. Alain is defiant through most of it, confident Jardin will ensure his return to Midmark. Eventually he realizes these are his last minutes. But not before he boasts of stealing the wrath’s schematics from the Admirilty’s summer home then trying to pawn them off to the Silver Throne. He lasts long enough for us to return the Jolly Gorgon with him.

There, Em is allowed to face her tormentor. Our gift to her is for her to deliver the slaying slice to his neck with his own sword. The crew have no quarrel with his fate since they are well familiar with Grells’s infamy on the waves. With enough sunlit remaining in the day, we prepare for the return trip to Midmark. Em decides to stay with us for now.

Session 128

Session 128

Pre-dawn, 12th of Tanrilden

Having made it back to the sewers after leaving the Thornton manor, the party is kind of quiet, left standing around underground, unsure of what to do next. Eventually, we remember the time, and signal our ship. Talking to Sturloc through the magical brooch, we learn that they are currently anchored just our from the island harbour, Thorfus passes on the information of our situation, including the location of Grell.

Sturloc is understandably unsure of what to do, and has misgivings of even going near Hugue’s island with Em on board. He tells us to try not to die, and signs off. Ronan suddenly brings up the idea that the brooches aren’t necessarily a pair, which has us questioning a few things.

Deciding to stay underground until at least afternoon, there is nothing we can do but get moving, and decide to head towards the bath house beneath the University. We begin heading towards the direction Malakor was going, west and then south, looking out all the while for tracks or other signs of their passing. Eventually finding some signs of passing of a large group going either west or south themselves, and we follow them south. From there, the trail keeps south through several junctions.

In one of the junctions, Chuq suddenly feels a chill before a deep croaking echoes throughout the chamber. From out of the sewage, a number of Bullywugs leap up and attack, wounding Chuq in the process. As they strike at us, many more come charging from the surrounding tunnels.

Their numbers initially seem dangerous, but our counterattack fells seven before they can react. They turn to run, allowing the two dwarfs to cut down another two, Chuq stunning a third. Leaving the rest to disappear into the tunnels, we set about tying up the stunned Bullywug ready for questioning.

The creature is near naked, and clearly more emaciated than the ones we fought many months previously. These Bullywugs, if they are the same tribe, have clearly not been doing well. A few carry small pouches, filled with little more than worthless scraps; , goblin skulls, bones and even scalps that could’ve been human, though we do find a a couple dozen silver pieces and maybe twice as much copper. One of the pouches have rudimentary scrimshaw, a representation of Bullywugs bowing to what is probably a Devilfish.

Thorfus interrogates the prisoner, initially in Goblin, but learning that it speaks Common, albeit badly. It is not very forthcoming, and less than happy to realise we were the ones to have chased them out of the bathhouse before. He seems to think all the goblins are gone. We make it point the way to the bathhouse, though the directions are vague, so we push him to his feet and make him lead on a leash.

We continue south past half a dozen junctions, before veering east for another four, then south once more. After the second southerly junction, we start descending a slope that leads to a different junction that splits east or south-west rather than the four cardinal directions. Here, it is damper and there is a lot more sewerage, the surroundings looking more like a previous adventurer below ground.

The Bullywug leads us east, ignoring a passage leaving south and then another leading north. For the first time, the Bullywugs pauses at potential courses changes, but remains relatively sure of his direction. He takes the next southerly passage, which slopes down again. Here, the water is running quicker. At the next branch, he turns east crossing a little footbridge into a tunnel in a state of ill-repair.

Our prisoner seems to be quickening the pace here, prompting Thorfus to pull him back, and he indicates we are nearing the end of the journey. Worried about the creature raising an alarm, as he does seem to be slapping is feet harder and louder, and Chuq suggests Ronan carry it.

Continuing east, Thorfus takes the lead and remains on lookout. Another north branch we pass smells like something rotten, and the lack of running water suggests that passage is blocked in someway. Eventually however, we stop after hearing a noise in the distance, something running towards us from he north. Chuq reads dumb hunger and at least four entities, so we prepare to fight.

At the edge of our infravision, the dwarves see creatures moving across the floor and ceilings. They resolve themselves into the forms of centipedes with tentacled heads, each around 9ft long. Ronan tosses the Bullywug into the centre as a distraction, which croaks and closes its eyes. The first two creatures descends upon him, another surging past at Axel. Axel is able to get a shot in at his attacker, wounding it greviously, but both he and the Bullywug go stiff with the paralysing venom of the creatures.

Thorfus is quick to counter Axel’s attacker with another heavy blow, causing it to fall from the ceiling, dead. Adhemar brings down another with a flurry of blows, before Edan fills the passage with magical webbing, entangling all but one, which continues to attack. Thorfus gets caught in a ferocious assault and falls to the paralysation effects.

With the webbing in place, the monks and Ronan are able to quickly dispatch the remaining creatures. Eventually, the dwarves and the bullywug feel their limbs loosen slowly and become able to move again. After pulling everyone away from the webbing, Axel lights it up with his flint and tinder to dissuade any further attacks and gives us access to what would be their lair. Thorfus pushes the bullywug into the passage, and we follow it until we find the obstruction.

A literal mountain of corpses fills the tunnel, human, goblin, bullywug and even a carnivorous ape skeleton lying amongst the refuse. After scanning with his skullcap, Chuq is able to read a colonial human, a bullywug and two goblins still alive in the pile. After checking for an Inquisitor’s mask, Chuq reassures the human whilst Thorfus dispatches both the paralysed bullywug and our prisoner. He and Axel free the goblins and explain the situation to them, citing that we know Malakor.

Sorting through the bodies, we dig out some treasure. Ignoring the silver and copper, we recover 2125 gold pieces and a number of gemstones. We take some time to divide up the gold into sacks, by which time the human awakes and begins talking and thanking us. His name is Haunild Gotmeld, and had come below ground to deal with a sewerage problem, losing his entire group in the process. Luckily, none of the others were in the pile, and he’d been dragged here, so he reasoned the rest of the group escaped. From his story, it seems he entered from the same grate outside the University we used to use.

We convince the goblins to lead us to the bathhouse. They knew of this area, and generally avoided it, but are pleased to see the corpses of the creatures and bullywugs. As we follow the goblins, Haunild expresses the desire to leave as quickly as possible, and after swearing him to secrecy and giving him some gold. We agree for him to go.

They lead us back west, and then south-west, stopping at pointing the way to the bathhouse. At this junction, we see the faded yet familiar site of chalk markings noting ‘GFC’. With our bearings now on track, we escort Haunild back to a grate to the surface, then continue following the goblins back south back along a familiar trail. Before long, we are back at the broken wall with its waterfall leading down into a room with pillars and mosiacs. The saltwater smell previously present is now thankfully gone.

As before, we tie off a rope, and clamber down into the entrance to the bathhouse. Chuq senses nothing with his helm in the immediate vicinity, so we head towards a pair of double doors, until he begins to pick thoughts that sounds goblin-like. One of the goblins with us heads up to the door and knocks the ‘secret knock’, a 1, 1-2, 1-2-3 pattern, and then leads us into the large chamber where we had our first altercation with the Bullywugs.

As we enter, the goblins exchange cautious greetings with other hidden goblins. Eventually, Malakor is brought to us, and he thanks us again for saving more of his people. The deal still stands, we can pass through to the tomb, or stay here and rest. He asks for our word that the men and dwarves (meaning the archaeologists) won’t be returning, which we give, and he offers us a room with beds to stay in since they won’t be using it.

Thorfus asks after the dwarven warrior automatons that were present in the tomb previously, though the goblin believes they were taken. He checks to make sure, but aside from a patch of what may have been blood, there is nothing. We retire to the rooms in the south. They are a little stuffy, being old sauna rooms, but functional enough to rest in.

We bed down for a few hours, roughly until what we believe is around 3pm, giving Edan time to recuperate his spells. The goblins leave us mostly to our own devices, and we decide to leave and head back towards Thornton Manor, utilising Chuq’s helm to ascertain if it is safe to head up to the surface. On the way out, Ronan hands over a few darts as a gift, to which the goblins on guard repay him with a rat. Apparently, it is good food.

We make good time back to the sewers beneath Thornton Manor. On the way, Chuq managed to catch small hints of nervousness and worry from above, though no references to us, as well as some sadness at the death of Darvo. Getting close enough to the guards, he can tell they are on edge, as there has been some attack on Thornton. There is also a lot more guards present, as there are a number of high-ranking officials within the house. A Greycloak present has apparently been ordered to bring in the Starchie Boyz if seen, though he harbours some misgivings about those the Chief Magistrate is meeting with.

The party climbs up out of the sewers, and approaches the gates to the manor. The Greycloak approaches and asks if we were Baldric’s Boys, visibly surprised at the presence of the Master of Spring. Apparently we are welcome to enter, although he is thinking about the sight of the Master of Spring lying dead in the hall of the manor. It seems as if the agreement is proceeding.

We follow him through the front door, as the meeting is taking place in the main hall, with many more double-takes at Adhemar’s presence. In the hall is six men, one is ‘Thornton’, joined by five older men. On the floor are three corpses, one of which is the exact twin of Adhemar, the other two being the cook and the butler. He asks us to explain, so Axel steps fowards and begins pulling at the corpse-Adhemar’s face. He struggles with it, but eventually the ‘face’ begins to pull away, seemingly attached by some sort of sticky goo. Eventually it comes away, resolving into a plain silver mask.

The man beneath, is Ir’Alle.

Now eyeless, the ex-cleric of the Baldric’s Boys lies dead on the floor. ‘Thornton’ points out it must be Imperials, before recognising the cleric, and pointing out that he was a cleric of Xen’Telar. He explains the events of last night, how Ir’Alle impersonating Adhemar had slain Darvo, claiming that the Order of the Celestial Dragon had allied with the Empire.

We check the clerics body, finding no visible change but for his eyes, and a knife wound in his back. ‘Thornton’ says he threw a poisoned dagger at him. We do find a scroll however, written in Ancient Dwarven;

Brother Ir’Alle,

It is essential to reinforce Midmark’s hatred of the Empire. To that end, your mission is as follows: 1) Use the stolen Inquisitor’s Mask and Ancient Dwarven magicks we have provided to traverse the Shadow Realm like an Imperial Dervish while wearing the face of Adhemar, Master of Spring. Kill Patriarch Darvo in front of as many witnesses as possible; 2) Deliver a message to the Chief Magistrate that the Order of the Celestial Dragon has allied with the Empire and that together they will crush Midmark. Plant the idea that Thornton must ally with us to avoid that fate. Only then will we bring back Grell to reverse the Magistrate’s recent moves against us.

Varkum Krai’Thalum

Thorfus translates for everybody gathered, which causes some unrest among the officials until ‘Thornton’ can quiet them. Despite implicating the Empire, the letter was sent from a Lord of Xurnost’khel, a member of the Silver Throne. ‘Thornton’ takes great pleasure in laying out the plot, winking at the party as he does. He turns to the Lords, explaining that several Greycloaks had apparently reported plots to assassinate several Midmark leaders by the Silver Throne. Thorfus pipes up and throws Grell’s name into the mix.

Clearly, he says, someone is trying to turn us against the Empire. ‘Thornton’ is pulling out all the stops to shift tensions and blames to the Silver Throne from the Empire. Not entirely disagreeable, but so blatant it’s a wonder the lords cannot see it.

We relay our exploits in the sewers, and one of the older council member pulls out his purse with some senility, handing us three silver pieces and advising us to invest. His name is Rand Gatesheved. Another steps forward and introduces himself as Flann Kastens, thanking us.

Pulling back to the situation at hand, we make sure to check over the cook and the butler, confirming their identities. Both their throats had been slit.

After checking that Grell’s warrant still stands, Thornton gently pushes the Council of Elders out, promising to meet them later in the afternoon. Once gone, he tells us more of Ir’Alle’s fate. He had been on a ship called the Yellow Harpy when it had gone missing. In reality, it had been caused by Imperial Privateers, and Ir’Alle had died under torture. The missing eyeballs was apparently a reference to the Ancient Dwarven clerical custom, the very same Axel had seen on Moysant.

He also explains that whilst Xurnost’khel is the home of the Silver Throne, reportedly the leadership of Xenilum’khel is almost entirely tied up in the company. He offers to give us a list of names of who not to trust, though it may be possible to begin disentangling Axel and Thorfus’ home from them.

When we confirm we intend to deal with Grell once and for all, he says he will send a message ahead so that his agents step aside so not to get caught up in it.

Ronan also puts forward the idea, that whilst our group has been known by many names, it’d be a good thing if we had some sort of title or badge that shows who we work for. Something to solidfy our ties to Midmark. ‘Keepers of the Council’ is put forward, which ‘Thornton’ quite likes and he believes he could swing positive votes for. All he asks is that we bring in Grell dead, so that he cannot talk, as there had once been talks to allow him to return and reclaim his family home.

‘Thornton’ overall seems quite happy with the way things have gone.

After cleaning up, we call the ship to let them know we’re coming. We leave the manor, and the Adhemar and the other monks take their leave for now, the monks expressing their misgivings and the unnecessary nature of some of what just transpired. We return to the ship by carriage, explaining the situation to our crew. Then we stop by the mill’s basement and take the time to lower the sub onto some heavy beams so we can retrieve the golden rope. After that, Almeric talks to several contacts to sell the oxen and wagon, which we sell for 160GP.

The ensigns have arrived, and we board. In the cabin, our group naturally has some questions about our heading. Sturloc asks several questions on Em’s behalf, including asking after ‘our grey friend’, to which Thorfus replies that he’d gone to join Talon. We discuss whether or not to tell her anything, but in the girl’s current fragile state, we decide to merely tell her Perette is on a mission right now. We also notice that Sturloc and Bellisente are walking around hand-in-hand.

After a quick debate with the harbour master’s men, needing to pay an extra day for berth, we set sail, heading for Hugue’s island.

#127: Sometime after midnight 11th-12th Tel Renden

#127: Sometime after midnight 11th-12th Tel Renden

12th of Tel Renden

Morning is upon the city of Midmark and everything has changed. The history I’ve learned – that we’ve all learned – is now suspect.

My last entry described how we were out-maneuvered by a cunning opponent, nearly killed, how we had become outlaws (from “heroes to zeros,” as colourfully put by Ronin) and were scurrying for our lives in the sewers.

As we waited for the grate to be opened, we discussed our options: to run, escape to the ship (which we had instructed to cast-off and wait in the bay) and leave Midmark or stay and try to clear our name since it was likely we’d need their help later.

Margin Note: Sarcof. Of Umamah Runnelbrook is here.

After some debate we concluded our only option was to attempt capturing Jardin/Thornton (yes, we discover this later) again and bring him to Aldus Runnelbrook whose reputation would help us clear our name.

After covering our tracks, we started by heading into the sewers that the company, apparently, were already familiar with it.

I suspected that wasn’t entirely true and was about to say something to Thorfus about that when we heard the faint sounds of an argument further down the sewer we were following.

Chuq and I immediately moved forward to investigate for obvious reasons. We quickly saw a troubling situation – some 20 armed men – mercenary bodyguards by the look of them – were shaking down the family they were hired by. Deplorable.

While Chuq relayed what was happening and I was contemplating how I could take out their leader. Thorfus, Axel and Ronin came barreling down the corridor. Our element surprise wasted – but the faces of the mercenaries when three heavily armed warriors cleaved their leader in two was worth it. Needless to say their morale was broken and they fled.

The family was a native one – roughly 12 people including children. The head of the family had done well for himself as a cartographer and was very thankful for our aid and not only helped us find our way to Thornton’s (he had mentally mapped the sewers – remarkable) but said he’d happily help us with our any cartography needs. I may take him up on that offer.

Not long after following the man’s directions we hear more voices, this time goblin. Chuq chirped that he knew the sources and called out for Malakor rather quickly. I’m told he was an old ally from the last time the company came by the sewers.

Chuq was right – it was Malakor and the remnants of his tribe making their way back to their former dwellings – in some old ancient dwarven bath house? Seems that the sewers connect to some ancient ruins. Malakor quickly explains that since their last meeting things had gone badly for his clan – the World Forge dwarves had driven them out of the bathhouse – blamed the company for their misfortunes, but was not seeking retribution as the riots have allowed them a chance to return home. Further, Malakor seemed to be reassured that the company did not lead any one down or tell anyone about the goblins.

Margin note: Goblins were “modified” by Anc.Dwrf from human or other race – fact confirmed by Thorfus. Ask for clarification. Bioforge records?

Malkor confirmed that no Grey Cloaks were currently in the sewers as far as he knew and confirmed our orientation towards Thornton’s home.

We arrived at the right location with no further encounters. Chuq, using his mind-probing skull cap, was able to confirm that and indicated that there were at least two guards and two servants attending. My own exploring confirmed a third guard that was “heard” by Axel’s clairaudience potion (as I was later informed).

Using Axel’s potion – we were able to confirm that Jardin/Thornton was indeed home and in his room. Unfortunately I was not able to spy his room, but did identify an entry point above the kitchen using the monks’ ability to move through shadows.

Margin Note: KalGn says sh.beast was a corrupted DVL or “construct” created to monitor/protect transpatial conduits (= shadow world!). Could the conduits be used to save us? As a weapon against the invasion? The Emperor? Explore.

After quickly checking the tunnels beneath the mansion for secret passages (without luck) a plan was devised. We decided to shadow-step to the room above the kitchen (likely servant quarters) then make our way to Jardin/Thornton’s room and deal with him.

The plan was sound – but again we were thwarted. It seems that our opponent can detect when Chuq uses his ability to move through shadows and was ready for us – again. However, this time he wanted to talk – which Thorfus agreed to.

Although I doubted he would be able to use the same magical ruse on us so quickly after confronting us earlier in the evening I kept silent – anyone powerful enough to cast such magic was not to be taken lightly. I was right to keep my tongue.

The imposter was Jardin an Imperial Agent my fellows suspected was the culprit. He told us he had apparently only recently “replaced” Thornton when an opportunity arose and continued to explain that he was trying to expedite the transition of Curabel back to the Imperial fold. It seems that the Imperials also know that doom is approaching us all.

Margin note: Our Thornton was no more. In hindsight, should have requested his body. -ED.

He further mentioned a few troubling truths. I say truths because our LiarBox did not shake during our entire discussion.

1. Baldric Evenkeel was a dragon – son of the Emperor himself. I wonder if Aldus or the other Elder Elves know this?

2. That he had been influenced by a dwarven crown/device to rebel against the Emperor.

3. That the Emperor killed Baldric (showed us a magical recording of the fight)

4. That the leader of the Chuq’s Order has joined the Emperor. Much to Adhemar’s and Chuq’s surprise.

5. Jardin is a dragon – he never said it, but it was implied.

6. The Emperor believes he’s best suited to repel the invasion, provided that Curabel is within the Empire.

5. The know about the invasion because many dwarven devices in their possession suddenly reactivated. They deduced that they’re returning.

6. They know little about the “Dark King” and don’t seem to be worried about him.

7. They know about Marchmain and the silver throne. How much they know is unclear.

Margin Note: Didn’t believe us when we told them that their would be no invasion – the Anc.Dwrf will destroy us from above. -ED.

He then offered us a deal – let him continue masquerading as Thornton and he’d clear our names, and the names of Chuq’s fellow monks who were now being accused of murdering Davro – our last influential ally in Midmark.

We debated it and reluctantly agreed to it – with some conditions:

1. No harm will come to Aldus Runnelbrook

2. All information they have on the Glass-steel from the ruins of agmar’s folly- he feigned no knowledge of it.

3. Ademhar and the other masters would become “advisors” to Thornton (after they were cleared of course)

4. We’d be given Grell’s mansion.

5. We’d be given Grell’s location so that we can bring him to justice.

6. We’d be given some power cells

Ronin hated this deal, and only agreed to it because he trusts Chuq and Thorfus. Chuq looked conflicted and almost wavering, but even he agreed to it. Thorfus and Axel – ever the pragmatists – were quick to agree.

I cannot stomach this deal. I fear for the elves and half-elves like Ronin and I should the Empire gain the upper hand. I’ve heard the stories, seen the evidence. It will be the end of our kind.

I did not voice my disapproval of this deal, though I doubt my voice would have dissuaded the group – I guess I agreed to it through my silence, so be it.

After what I’ve seen I am tempted to let this world burn, leave to some remote mountain top or island and watch us enter oblivion. Yet I still have hope that we’ll survive this – what will come of it after? Who knows.

That said, of course, the Imperials cannot be trusted. I know the others know this, question is, who will betray the other first? Us or them?

One last thing – should I send word to the Elves? Would they believe me, a half-elf? I shudder to think what they’d do if they did.

11th of Ten’Relden – Around Midnight

11th of Ten’Relden – Around Midnight

Spite, Perette, Elfred, the Lord Mayor and Boris – I write these names first – to remind me what hubris and overconfidence can cost. On a more gruesome note, in case we’re not successful and someone finds this journal.

I’m sitting in a crypt – waiting for Thorfus and the others to open the grate to the sewers below to make our escape. I’ll explain quickly.

It started with a simple plan – take the Sword of Dagon and the Undying Cubes to the ship. Leave them, Sturloc and the henchmen behind. Then head to the Ark Temple where the Chuq’s compatriots would join us to confront the false Thornton. Take him down, and possibly gain more insight.

{the following is written in a mixture of regular and short-hand script}

The plan started well, we travelled with little issue to the ship, and after some instructions for Sturloc (gave him my com. brooch) we left for the Temple & Courthouse. Again – little trouble. A few questions here and there but nothing serious. Sounds of riots echoed throughout our travel.

In the courtyard we were met by the two master monks, Archambault (Master of Dragons – ironically) and Adhemar and two junior monks, Elfred and Juhel.

We hoped to gain an audience with Thornton by telling the guard captain that we had some critical information for him. The guard the captain sent returned to tell us he could not and was in conference with the Lord Mayor and did not want to be disturbed.

Chuq insisted – reminding the Guard Captain that the Lord of Spring was with them. That got us in – in hindsight we should have realized it was too easy. Overconfidence blinded us.

We made our way to Thornton’s small office, there we made our accusations and tried to subdue him – I while invisible the others in full view.

Thornton tossed Axel like a sack of oats as the young dwarf attempt to grapple the man and withstood a pummeling from the rest of us. All while he tried to kill the Lord Mayor – thankfully Thorfus shielded the poor man.

We fought, but nothing seemed to hurt him and with some guttural words I could not understand he stuck the floor and unleashed a fiery explosion – sending us all towards the walls.

With one spell (I assume it was a spell, I hope that was a spell) he killed those I mentioned earlier and nearly killed Ronin and the others – was it not for the quick actions of my companions.

Margin note: How did he survive & escape? Ronin – mentioned a mirror? An illusion maybe – secret passage? Must investigate.

As the guards entered the room I realized Thornton was gone, I came invisible, seeing me there would have been complicated to explain so I used the smoke and ashes to blend in with the on-rushing guards. Boris’ remains in my hands and Chuq’s words echoing in my mind – get healers.

So I hurried to fetch the priests of the Ark Temple. Davro called upon his fellows and headed across the courtyard as I attempted to clean myself up.

In hindsight so many things should have warned us of this possibility. A Grey Cloak I passed on my way to the temple hinted at a monk plot. Oh had we seen it earlier – we had fallen into a trap!

Not long after I saw the priests enter the courthouse they emerged with Thorfus, Chuck and the others (all healed- thank the healers) – arguing with the guard and Grey Cloaks – I assume that Chuq and Thorfus explained what happened to Davro and he believed them – disputing the missive sent by Thornton from another location. Logically its clear – guards saw him with us here, yet here’s a missive from him from another location.

I saw that it wasn’t going well and began to plan my escape to the ship when suddenly the Grey Cloaks moved forward swords drawn. Moments later Chuq and the other monks appeared behind me at the temple doors with the others and something – else :

(sketch of the following description : Bipedal torso, roughly ape-like. Its short, narrow body is covered with pinkish, warty, and bumpy skin. It has a tail and vomit odor. Atop the body is a horse-like head, adorned with ruff. Four small, multi-faceted amber eyes bespeckle a skeletal visage. It has huge human-like ears. A trunk-like nose completes the portrait.)

I don’t what it was, or why it stepped through but Thorfus took it down using the Probability Sword – its body melting into the floor – revealing dwarven 1’s and 0’s tattooed over it’s body.

Margin Note: Ask Kalg.

With that we ran into the temple and closed the doors behind us. We then headed for the crypts where we are now. Apparently the others have been here before and know we can use the sewers to escape. Chuq tells me he told Davro that we were heading to the roof as a red-herring.

It’s time – must go… may fortune and fate guide us.

As promised :

Journal Entry: 11th of Ten’Relden

It has been an eventful few days – starting with the surprising return of Axel. I thought the dwarf had joined the ranks of the undying – but lo and behold he escaped his captors and is amoung us again. I just wish he had better news.

My worst fears were confirmed by his story – there is a greater threat than the machinations of Marchmain, the Dark King or even Kalgunn (more on it later). It seems we have 5 months in order to find a solution to a great destruction and likely return of an ancient foe. The dwarves are coming, and they won’t be happy with the mess that old rebellion has wrought. A mess that our explorations and actions have only made more complicated to solve. Ah – but I’ll elaborate on that when I have more time.

We’ve hired on a new henchman – an illusionist fallen on hard times, Edis Applebee. Recommended to us by way of Severe Kaiser – a local thief with some promising talent. What is more interesting was his story – he was attacked some 6 months ago, rather threatened by a “faceless” man, calling Edis a “deceiver of men” and demanded Edis to stop practicing his art then beat Edis and took his eye and some of his spell books as a warning (the brute!). My companions are convinced this was an Imperial agent – possibly an Inquisitor. After some prodding, Edis revealed to us the likely reason he and other Illusionists were targeted – he has the ability to see through illusion – therefore he (and other like him) could see through the illusionary magic of the Imperial masks. A threat indeed. It’s no wonder he was hired on the spot and handed over to Belasante to get him bathed and properly geared for our trip.

Oh – I almost forgot – Last evening, with Canis’ help, we made ourselves a little hideout underneath a mill we’ve rented – rather Ronin has rented – we “expanded” it in order to store the submersible we’ve acquired for further study. Thorfus and I rigged a makeshift crane and gang-plank for it using some spare wood, a pulley and that disgusting, indestructible elven-hair rope. I shudder to think how that thing was made. Once all this is done, I’ll see about disposing of it properly.

Canis will be leaving us to continue his search for his family. I wished him luck and hope that he finds them before our time is up.

We also had a run-in with the local devilfish Dreys while Thorfus and I moved the ship late in the evening – he again warned us about the “others” he felt when we spoke last. It seems he’s worried about our “relationship” with the Night Court and thinks we’re dealing with Araquelle/Kotar again. Thorfus tells me that he was able to confirm that Araquelle/Kotar did indeed go to Vargen, and was looking for a Winged Dragon specialist – likely something to do with his possession of Prix’s body. Thorfus tells me he exchanged information regarding the “doom” clock we have in our possession. Dreys did not let one what he thought about the countdown – I wonder if he understood the implication.

Today we complete our preparations for our departure from Midmark and head off to buy a ship of all things. A ship I could potentially transform into something more interesting.

As we travelled to the dock side tavern called the Salty Judge (where I’m told a Captain Pouls was offering his ship for sale) we were adopted by a stray cat, much to Boris’ chagrin. Seems that Chuq has taken a liking to him and has designated himself as its caretaker. That is until Boris likes drives it off. Ha ha ha.

At the crowded tavern we meet this captain and discover through our discussion that Vargen is under an embargo from Midmark until Vargen authorities hand over the Bargemen and others implicated in the slavery ring. Not a popular move. Furthermore, we discovered that the Ambassador of Xelen’Kel and his entourage, the World Forge and Silver Throne representatives have also been expelled from Midmark – further complicating matters within and city.

The ship, the Jolly Goron ( a good name), is rather large – roughly the same as the Javelin we’ve travelled on previously. It will suit our needs as it comes ready with a crew. I won’t detail the negotiations – but Thorfus managed to purchase the ship for 5,000 gold pieces – which he paid in gems. I wonder exactly how wealthy my companions are. I’ve only recently joined this crew and I’m far wealthier now that I ever have been before, I can only imagine the wealth they’ve already accumulated. Not that it will matter if we fail.

The negotiations complete, the paperwork was handled quickly and Thorfus is now Captain of the Jolly Gorgon and proceeds to explain to the crew our next moves – that we’ll be ferrying someone home and that the crew will be paid as they already are.

As he did so i surveyed the ship – I figure 10 to 12 spheres will be required to lift the ship – I must now figure out a propulsion system – maybe still use sails temporarily until I find something more suitable for our trip into the heavens. I must check with Kalgunn, but I think I’ll have to find a way to trap air onboard like the submersible – the glass steel perhaps?

When i returned Thorfus had chosen a member of the crew to act as a liaison – as we’re not seafarers we’ll need some help. His name is Almeric and seems pleasant enough.

After purchasing supplies for our trip and arranging to have some our equipment moved from the Cock & Bull to the ship – we went to collect our ward at the naval yards and of course we encountered red-tape. Thankfully, we encountered young Admiral Quynel Fraunk and were quickly given a warrant for Hugues. The boy was smitten by our stay cat and cuddled him – as you might gather – Boris was not amused.

As we made our way to the courthouse to meet Thorton to ask him for some of the undying cubes for my experiments we saw what looked like riots all over our route – people unhappy with the embargo, and many seemed to be unleashing pent up frustration towards dwarves, natives and colonials alike. I fear it will only get worse – it saddens me that few can see beyond ethnic or racial lines. I still hope that this can change.

Once at the now bustling courthouse – troops and officials were running right and left – it wasn’t long before we were brought to Thorton. He was obviously busy dealing with attacks on dwarves and others all over Midmark. Admittedly I was surprised how quickly he agreed to let me have as many cubes as I required; 15 of the 25 recovered – I could have taken them all, but i did not want to arouse suspicion. I’m glad I didn’t because after we left Thorton’s presence we made a discovery – or rather our new companion Edis did.

Thorton was a “faceless” man. Yes – Edis immediately saw through the magical disguise and saw the blank mask I’ve been told are often worn by Imperial agents.

As that news sank in the mood changed and Chuq insisted he speak with the head of his order whose building lay nearby. We waited as he went to see the Master of Spring regarding Thorton.

My companion’s paranoia seemed to have gotten the better of me – i spent the time checking the cubes and crate they were in for any runes or magics laid on it. I felt foolish for it, but in hindsight it was likely a prudent thing to do.

Chuq returned with news that the Master of Spring is still who he is and as agreed to join us in confronting Thorton later this evening.

I’m afraid I must end my account now – Chuq and I must ferry Perrette and Em from their hiding place to the Jolly Gorogon where Edis and Belasante will meet us and supervise them and the ship until our confrontation is done. Thankfully (or not) the riots have gotten worse since our return to the Cock & Bull – I fear it will be a bloody night.

I was right – on our way to the Jolly Gorgon we saw much rioting. I had to intervene decisively on one occasion in order to save a family with children …

With Em safely with Belasate and Edis aboard the ship, Perette, Chuq and I have made our way back to the Cock & Bull. We now must prepare to confront Thorfus and hopefully take him alive. Assuming Edis is right, he’ll be able to shed light on what exactly the Imperials are planning – or he might be able to help us communicate with the Mad king whom we assume is the Emperor. Either way – the evening has only begun and is far from over. I’ll continue later…

Session 124.1 – Master of Spring Adhemar’s revelation of THOSE WHO COME (as told by +John Carlson and + Rahm…

Session 124.1 – Master of Spring Adhemar’s revelation of THOSE WHO COME (as told by +John Carlson and + Rahm Benisaeko)

On another note, has Axel shared Moysant’s commission to spread his prophecy? Chuq needs to alert the order. Want to resolve that conversation via Google+ +John Carlson?

+Rahm Benisaeko: That would be fine; I imagine your intent is to let Adhemar (Master of Spring) know about the prophecy. Since you still had two days of training after Axel’s arrival, that should be easy to do while at the Ark Cathedral. What exactly do you tell him? Everything? Also, do you approach the Ark hierarchy, too, or leave that to Adhemar?

+John Carlson : yes, Chuq wants an interview with Adhemar. He reports the prophecy, his source (Axel) and our intent to pursue a solution in Vargen. If pressed, he will outline the circumstance of Axel’s abandonment and subsequent journey to the surface. Providing details about Axel’s travelling companions only if asked. I leave it to Adhemar to inform the hierarchy since I think the highest levels should be dealing with this. Of course Chuq is willing to join him or answer any future summons as long as we are in Midmark. And he solicits Adhemar’s advice including a speculation about the Mad Lord’s identify.

+Rahm Benisaeko: Chuq is able to schedule an audience with Adhemar on the afternoon of the 9th of Tanrilden, following his day of training. The Master of Spring sits and listens quietly to this report of a prophecy about the end of the world, its source with Axel, and the means by which this doom may be averted. After Chuq concludes his tale, Adhemar thinks for a moment before replying: “You say that this prophecy was given to your dwarven companion? By whom? Were they also dwarves and is the claim that this comes from Xen’Teler? I must admit, Master Nourus, that your friend’s story defies belief and I wonder if you are being sent after a red herring to obfuscate some danger closer to home … I will share this with Patriarch Darvo, though, and see if any of the Ark clerics have experienced premonitions of this danger of any kind. Any further details about the origin of this vision that could bolster your claims would be appreciated.”

“Regarding talk of a mad lord, I agree that there have been persistent rumors that the last few Dragon Emperors suffered from some kind of mental instability — but these are just rumors, started by the small number of refugees that have arrived on the islands in the last decades and spread by those who feel safer believing their enemy is brutish rather than cunning. No one can vouch for their veracity — believe me that the Order has investigated — but I would like to think that, if the world is endangered, we are not beholden to a tyrant. I noticed that you do not ask about the Consort and Liar, though … are they already known to you? Having a firm identity to go with those titles might make this story seem slightly less fanciful to those who do not implicitly trust the judgment of you and your companions.”

“Master Adhemar, your admonition of a red herring lies at the root of why I am reticent to answer your questions. Myself and my companions have learned to share our intelligence guardedly and unfortunately, the current political climate in the City of Gulls holds my tongue despite my duty to you as apparent leader of our Order. However, my band is in possession of certain items that can be used to authenticate not only my veracity to you but yours to myself. Please understand, the effectiveness of these tools will rely on your willful relaxation of your formidable mental disciplines but not before my own veracity can be ascertained. Once we are both satisfied, all that I know can be shared with you in less time than you can possibly believe. With your leave, I can arrange a private interview at private location in the Sellsword Quarter. What say you?”

John, the plan would be to invite Adhemar to our lair at the C&B. Then with the Boyz approval (attendance is optional) demonstrate the liar box, then use it to convince Adhemar I mean no harm as I use the night cap & box on his open mind to ensure his identity (likely ask him to imagine/remember his earliest memories of Chuq on Lonely Isle). Then either take him down if he is an impostor (with the Boyz help) or share all Chuq’s memories concerning Kaligan, Kotar/Arraguille, Bioforge, Marchmain – Xeno Tel dream, Desric, Engineering, Kalgunn, Pathogen, Special Research, Praxithalmus, Uthruk’s separation, Dark King forces, Axel abandonment then saga to the surface and rumors of Kotar’s last known sighting.

Adhemar will look at Chuq with a puzzled expression. “That’s an interesting proposal — I suppose, as the most senior member of our Order available, that it would be sensible to check on the accommodations of the only monk in Midmark not currently housed at the Ark Cathedral. I believe your lessons with Master Archembaud conclude tomorrow afternoon; I will make arrangements to visit this location of yours after dinner to both inspect it and offer my official congratulations on your advancement.” With that, he has you relate directions to the meeting place.

So, his offer is to meet you at the location of your choosing on the evening of the 10th of Tanrilden (when we are picking up the game Wednesday). It’s up to you whether we save the resolution of that for the session itself or deal with it here in the comments — either would work, so it’s more a matter of how involved the other party members want to be.

It doesn’t seem like anyone objects to resolving the visit via G+, so let’s do that:

After Chuq finishes his last day of training with Archembaud, who has been mollified as to your dedication and attentiveness to his teaching after a rocky beginning, he makes his way back to the Cock & Bull for a quick meal before Adhemar’s scheduled arrival. Shortly after sunset, the Master of Spring appears as promised at the gate to the townhouse’s yard and is allowed entry by the hirelings. They escort him to the door and announce his arrival, whereupon he has Chuq lead him on a brief tour of the premises. He doesn’t comment during this walk-through, but afterwards quips: “No one, Master Chuq, would be able to question your commitment to asceticism after seeing these accommodations. I am satisfied that your lifestyle is in keeping with the Order’s tenets. Now, I believe there was some other business you wished to discuss?”

Yes, always staying true to the roots of MurderHoboing! – “Master of Spring, this box has an ancient enchantment that chimes when a lie is stated in its presence. We have learned in our travels that a family needed it to curb the excesses of an unruly uncle. I will start by demonstrating its capabilities and then will ask you to state your identity before I share all we know about the prophecy…My name is Chuq Nourus Superior Master of the Order of the Celestial Dragon and I was born on the Lonely Isle. I discovered a talent long lost or abandoned by the Order that allows me to step from one shadow to another without travelling the actual distance no matter how far the two shadows are.” Pause for effect…”The building we are in is a mansion with chandeliers, servants and marble floors; My wife is an Elf named Philomena; Immaculate Cantor and I had lunch today….”

“Before we begin, feel free to test the box further by stating some facts and/or lies”

The box reacts as expected to Chuq’s statements, rattling loudly at the lies and remaining quiet for the truth. Adhemar looks impressed and begins speaking: “I am Adhemar, Master of the Spring and highest-ranking member of the Order of the Celestial Dragon in Midmark. I am also Patriarch Darvo of the Ark Cathedral.” As you would expect, the box starts silent and then rattles … however, Adhemar simply closes his eyes, begins breathing deeply, and repeats: “I am also Patriarch Darvo of the Ark Cathedral. I am also Patriarch Darvo of the Ark Cathedral.” With each repetition the box grows quieter until it is silent.

Adhemar opens his eyes: “That is a powerful tool for the discovery of truth, but it can be tricked by means of mental discipline with effort and practice. The box doesn’t know truth itself, but rather compares the spoken word to what the speaker believes. While trickier and more invasive than any mind-reader I have encountered previously, if your innermost being can reflect the lie perfectly, the device will be blinded by that false image.”

“Brilliant deduction Master, now that you have discovered its limit we can adjust our usage appropriately. Boyz, let’s look upon the Master’s discovery as given in the spirit of faithful cooperation.” (FYI, this man’s AC is 2 and he attacks four times a round for 5-30 damage each hit).

“If there are no further objections, allow me to demonstrate the powers of this golden skull cap. When I don the cap, it allows me to read the thoughts and emotions of those around me. I can also send messages to other minds that are not only words but images, feelings and whole memories. This is how I plan to share all I know about the prophecy with you. Of course, you will have to relax yourself to allow me to penetrate you mental defenses. Shall we begin?”

Adhemar nods: “There are many in Midmark now who would question my sanity for agreeing to this request, but I have seen nothing to suggest duplicity or ill will on either your part or that of your companions. You may commence.” With that, he closes his eyes again, relaxing muscles and slowing his breath. Through the skull cap, Chuq can feel Adhemar purposefully lower his mental defenses.

Via the Helm, “Master of Spring, see now my last memory of our monastery on Lonely Isle… now if you may, show me your earliest memory of myself.”

Assuming the shared information is as expected, Chuq says out loud “No worries, this is Adhemar. Now I will share with him…” All of the following :

1. Grimtooth’s tale of fleeing the Dark King.

2. Lifting Arraquill’s curse from the Imperial Fort.

3. Bioforge experimenter’s vivisection notes

4. Desynching ancient captives & Desric’s back story

5. Marchmain ESP attempt followed by Xeno Tel trip

6. Chief Bioforge researcher fight/notes discoveries

7. Edan intro (met Uthruk in Skarnwode) then Illske encounter (village massacre, our fight then flight)

8. Engineering exploration – Kalgunn & Dwarf Baby’s Mama message

9. Chief Pathogen researcher fights/notes discoveries

10. Illske capture of Axel

11. All of Special Research

12. Runnelbrook help with helm then Ark healing

13. Night court – agreement, ancient history & Brice revelations

14. Return of Axel

Of course if he fails the last test, I alert everyone via the helm and ask the Night Court to overwhelm his mind with noise as an initial distraction.

Chuq dives into Adhemar’s memories, focusing on the time before the Order left Lonely Island. Much of it flashes by quickly in a montage of daily devote living, but with the help of Serithaz you are able to focus quickly on an early memory of a young initiate in trouble for losing his temper while exercising in the keep’s yard. It’s a blurry picture, almost forgotten, but it does match your own hazy recollection of a senior monk scolding you. Following upon that are brief glimpses of Chuq over the years whenever he made an impression on Adhemar — which was, admittedly, not often prior to the last year.

Assuming that is sufficient proof of the monk’s identity, Chuq shares his recollections of the party’s adventures as outlined above. It flashes by so quickly, it’s impossible to even process every bit of the story as it bursts into Adhemar’s consciousness. His eyes flicker open and get a dazed and faraway cast to them; it is almost an entire minute after the sharing of memory before his eyes focus back on Chuq.

“I … I don’t know what to say. Your memories defy belief and yet they are as clear to me as my own. These dwarves … they truly have the capacity to do what Axel’s vision threatens? Those terrible wonders beneath Xen’Khel are real? Then you must go and find these potential saviors and prevent the arrival of these monsters. I must go and consult with the senior monks about the situation on Lonely Isle; to see our former home become the stronghold of these Silver Throne deceivers is unacceptable. Perhaps I can undo the mistake the Grandmaster and I made in leaving that place.”

Oh snap, had no idea the cap could search through another mind like Professor X or Spock!

“Now you see why despite all that besets Midmark, we are needed elsewhere. Consider that to any resurrected Ancient Dwarven soul, our occupation of the Lonely Isle can be viewed just as abhorrently as you feel now. Meaning they will likely feel the Orders return as more invasion and less reunion. Also, there would be a deep longing in my heart if I was not part of that return. Allow me to also share some secrets of the Ancient Dwarve’s constructs. The knowledge will serve our Order well in any combative encounters. Also, with Lord Ironhand’s permission, there is one other item we can exploit. Thorfus, would you be so kind as to use your mask and scry the Lonely Isle and share your vision with us?”

Chuq will night cap data dump his Automatom, bonuses and Thorfus scrying.

[Regarding Professor X, keep in mind — hah! — that you knew what was being sought and were helped by Serithaz; not necessarily typical circumstances.]

Adhemar considers Chuq’s words, but counters: “I cannot promise that the Order will stand by while these servants of the Ancient Dwarves corrupt our former home with their works. Any accusation of ‘invasion’ from those who would descend from the outer dark to enslave the world are laughable. Still, our Order’s numbers are reduced and we are dispersed throughout the islands, so I will promise that no move will be made precipitously.”

After that he will allow Chuq to share the automata information and scrying information (assuming +Follow Me, And Die! has no objections). When that is done, he will excuse himself to begin his consultations, wishing Chuq and the party good fortune in their hunt for Kottar/Araquiel.

Session 124

Session 124

Pre-Dawn, 4th Tanrilden

Alainon is shocked as he opens the door to Perette and Em, though notices Thorfus after a second, calming him a little. Allowing the three inside, Em introduces herself as ‘Lady Em’ and explains the situation to the ex-clockmaker. Whilst he does keep casting suspicious looks at Perette throughout.

Visible to the group is a bed that has been set up in the former workshop, and occupying it, amongst the half-repaired clocks, is Itamad, Alainon’s wife. The woman is very ill and bedridden, and as such they don’t use the upstairs much. After emphasising the fact that he will not get involved politics, he agrees to let them stay upstairs.

After checking out the place, Em asks after an odd glowing brick displaying numbers. Alainon tells her that it was a gift from Desric Threehorn, an Ancient Dwarven Clock. It displays 0.000.05.11, and has been steadily counting down. He offers it to Thorfus, since he has no need of it.

Arranging for Alainon to meet the party in the Cock & Bull if he needs anything, Thorfus leaves.

Evening , 5th Tanrilden

Thorfus finishes up passing on his teachings to Ronan. The man feels much more confident in fighting taller opponents now. Thorfus’ automonkey troop finishes their repairs.

Chuq receives his order from Roland, and is able to finish studying up on Devilfish physiology.

Canis, during his training is able to refine a vial of poison from the Urchin spines. Unfortunately, he is unable to get the breathing coral plants to take in order to grow more.

Ronan decides to enquire after the remains of Desric’s shop, to see who owns it and if it is up for purchase. He also looks for some small canalside shack, and finds an old mill just off of West Copper Street near the Paper Bazaar that has a small room in the basement to let. Adhemar Gyll, the owner, charges him 2GP a month.

Edan receives his new travel hat. It is rather dashing. He also has some time to study the plans for the submersible, and the crystal system. It apparently has similarities to Bioforging.

Over the next few days, the party learns that the Wrath of Waves was found, drifting after running out of fuel. After being towed back, rumours are abound that a shadowy man was seen clinging to it as it sped away. Further rumours state that the man was the missing leader of the Grey Cloaks.

During the week, our hirelings bring back various rumours. One stands out, Edvard from the Flotsam and Jetsam reportedly saw Kottar. The ex-hireling-come-devilfish-host and his companions had been looking for passage to Vargen.

A man had been heard trying to drum a hunting party to go after giant lizards in the jungle.

Archer’s Irregulars made money on the Pyrolisk contract they failed by selling the eggs to Boscelin.

An old adventurer apparently knows the location of a stash of gold that belonged to an old Imperial leader. He would be willing to sell his papers to the location.

A single applicant responded to Chuq’s advertisement. A narrow-faced, blue-eyed woman named Sevare Keiser, who apparently had some mechanical skill. She once worked for the Marlboro gambling house, but found the work unsavoury. Whilst she had some skill in getting into difficult spaces, Chuq turned her down, as we didn’t need her skills, but agreed to send any martial or pious types to him. Apparently she knows a man of some mystical skill, although he is quite the shut-in, she agrees to arrange a meeting.

Towards the end of the triaining, Pons gathers the group together to deliver some news. He speechifies a little, but after all the whacky adventurers, decides he wants to lead a different life. Perhaps a little less dangerous and a little more profitable. He says his farewells, but leaves a note with a location so we can get back in touch with him and the remnants of the Raptors in Vargen. Chuq reads his mind as clear, and we have Bellisante vet his gear, and after a round of handshakes and nods (definitely no hugs), and leaves.

In response to this though, several of the hirelings express desires of moving on also, for similar reasons. Apparently, the beach at Agmar’s Folly was far too intense, though Chuq learns that the less than savoury rumours about the group held some part in it. They are thankful for Thorfus’ generosity however, and remain amicable.

Evening, 8th Tanrilden

Canis completes his training.

Late that night, whilst the party hang around the Cock & Bull, the door opens to a woman and a dwarf, Axel Rhom’khul and his companion Spite.

Both are battered, bloodied and tired, but they gather around in jubliant greeting, and after many drinks, begin to trade names and stories, the ominous things they’ve learned in the meantime. The realisation that it is a mere five months until the potential apocalypse is a sobering one.

Edan fetches Kalgunn, and we sit around and force him to speak out loud. Edan asks him about the numbers, and the sword responds that it is too late now, we’ve messed up all his plans. His plan was to transfer himself into the orb, and ascend to the orbital palace and take Xeno’Tel’s place. Doing so would allow him to be in control of all the stones of the portals. He is very convinced that burying the orb and killing Prixithalmus means there is no hope.

To prevent the coming storm, we need to have control of the portal on the Orbital Station. Kalgunn trusted that Marchmain had a way of transferring the orb past the station’s defences. But now…

Marchmain’s plan was reportedly to restore Xeno’Tel and attempt to convince the AI to help lie to the incoming fleet.

Serithos chimes in at the mention of ‘dead dragon’, when we discuss the possible whereabouts of her corpse and whether she can be revived. Upon reviewing Chuq’s memories of the events, Serithas begins to laugh uncontrollably at the idea of killing the Emperor’s Consort and leaving her body with Araquiel. We suddenly realise we left her with the one person who could place her essence in a living body again.

Sometime later, there is a knock at the door. It is Owen, bringing a message that they can meet with his master, Drays. As we make to leave, Chuq notes a pair of men watching the Cock & Bull, and they note us leaving. Ronan immeadiately heads over to them proclaiming neighbourhood watch, and they scramble to make conversation between themselves (dog breeds). They try to pass off checking out the Marlboro and Cock & Bull, but he menaces them into moving along, they stop eventually, but Chuq learns mentally that they are Grey Cloaks.

We’re tailed for a while, but manage to lose them. Eventually, Owen leads us to an area of the canals near the wall to Hightown, where we are greeted with a familiar buzzing. He asks after our tasks, knowing it is complete, and our intentions on following through with it. Throughout this, the Night Court remains silent, and Drays does not seem to notice them.

We learn throughout the conversation that the only reasons for the Devilfish’s involvement in the Mermish Civil War is a power play amongst themselves, and a need to not be invconvenienced any longer by the disruption it is causing across the bay. We also learn that they are patiently working on the Grell situation.

Asking after the location and timing of the delivery of the weapon to the Mermen, Owen was apparently supposed to tell us to speak with Garspa, an advisor to the Mermish Prince, who is orchestrating some Peace Conference between the two factions. The meeting is supposed to take place in the Merman city of Shiggareth.

Ronan asks after the old man living out in the bay, to which Drays responds by wanting to make a deal. Apparently, he would settle for some share of the gems gathered from the man’s stash, and we suddenly get the idea this man is not all that he seems, and is apparently not even a man of the land, a troublemaker in fact. Drays is of the idea that should we go, we will leave with the man dead, but is unwilling to give up any more information unless we commit to going.

Eventually, we agree. The man’s name is Garmeth Saltbreeze, living on a houseboat above the wreckage of the Silver-Toed Strumpet, a ship laden with gemstones. The man is not such at all times, and is in fact a servant of Dagon, a shapeshifter who can take the form of a shark. He is not alone, and commands a force of sharks. Drays, in return for a single share of gemstones, wants Garmeth dead and his forces destroyed and scattered.

Drayz suddenly asks if there is someone new with us. He asks how many are present, and mentions that something is odd, before suddenly going silent. The buzzing that also accompanies a Devilfish’s presence disipates as well. We send off a confused Owen, and make way inland to head back home, casting questioning glances at the skull cap.

Serithas eventually speaks, and notes things as being ‘interesting’. They seem quite dismayed at the current state of their ancestors, and ask if we’re ok with them trying to drown the lands. They agree however, that the Devilfish seem petty, though Drays was clearly hiding stuff, not that it was news to us. He was eager to follow through with the deal with the Mermen.

We return to the townhouse easy enough, passing by Ronan’s new place on the way. He points out that between Canis and Edan, they could magically install a dock in the basement with access to the canal so they can store the submarine.

We stop to discuss our plans, starting with the sonic weapon. We postulate its use against the space portal, though that would depend on how the mechanism interacted with the vacuum. Delivery as well, would likely depend on what Marchmain was cooking up. We also suddenly realise that Axel has heard Glavnone somewhere before, that is, the fire giant working at the mines north of Xen’Khel.

Thorfus basically puts down that we have three things to deal with, maybe a fourth. The sub, Perette and Em, the sonic weapon, and perhaps Grell. Axel also puts forward the idea of chasing Kottar/Araquiel, and the Dark King will always remain a looming threat.

For the submarine, the party teeters between storing it and selling it, eventually deciding that for now at least, we will store it. Canis will spend some time working on shaping the cave for it.

For Perette and Em, we need to discuss things with Perette, although the idea is that they need to be spirited out of Midmark, using the Inquisitor Mask and ESP-blocking circlet to mask their identities. Ronan’s idea that we could send them to Hugue’s Island, or the Ironhand/Rhom’khul families in Xenilum’Khel. Of course, on top of all that remains the question of Thornton’s identity and agenda.

The Sonic Device, and the Were-Shark we reason that there are no time limits on dealing with.

We finish off the night considering plans to charter a boat for passage to Hugue’s island. Axel, finally back with the party, but feeling no more safer, sets down to pen some letters after checking on Spite.
